Statement from Representative Mannion on Donald Trump and Elon Musk’s Cuts to Food Banks, School Meals, and Programs that Help them Source Food from Central New York and Mohawk Valley Farms
SYRACUSE, NY – Representative John W. Mannion (NY-22) today released the following statement on Donald Trump and Elon Musk’s cuts to food banks, school meals, and programs that help them source food from Central New York and Mohawk Valley farms:
“If your objective is to do the most harm across society to fund a tax cut for the richest Americans – people like Elon Musk – then cutting food banks, school meals, and programs that help them source their food from local farmers is where you should look.
As a member of the Agriculture Committee, I’m appalled by and adamantly oppose Donald Trump and Elon Musk’s cruel cuts to food banks and food assistance programs. Central New York and the Mohawk Valley have strong agricultural economies, and these cuts will cause financial pain for farmers and impact the health and wellbeing of children, families, seniors, and veterans.
In the State Senate, I secured resources for the Food Bank of CNY and vastly expanded the free school meals program to almost every district in the state. I recently helped prepare 200 meals as part of the Home Delivered Meals Program in Cortland County. Food insecurity is higher now than during the pandemic.
I will fight these cuts and stand up for farmers, schools, and everyone in NY-22 and beyond who need, and provide, these services.”
