Statement from U.S. Representative John Mannion (NY-22) on President Trump's Address to Congress

March 6, 2025

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Representative John W. Mannion today released the following statement on President Trump’s address to Congress:

“I was hoping President Trump would talk about how we could work together—Republicans and Democrats—to lower costs, lift people up, and improve the lives of families in Central New York and the Mohawk Valley.

Instead, I heard the same lies, attacks, and Kremlin talking points that Donald Trump and Elon Musk have unleashed into American discourse.

The Trump/Musk agenda is a reckless pursuit of dangerous policies built on misinformation.  They are tanking our economy, sinking the stock market, and driving up inflation. Their so-called “golden age” is nothing more than a gilded giveaway to billionaires and foreign adversaries, paid for with cruel cuts to services for seniors, veterans, and children in need.

Worse yet, this administration and its enablers in Congress are not just ignoring the Constitution, they are actively dismantling it. Trump and Musk are illegally consolidating power, gutting oversight, and undermining the rule of law. Their DOGE initiative—pitched as a plan to improve government efficiency—is nothing more than a sham to slash essential services, making government less responsive to the needs of the people. And they are cozying up to dictators and autocrats while unraveling the international alliances that have kept America strong and secure for eighty years.

I refuse to stand by while they attack our democracy, our values, and our future.

That’s why I am taking action—hosting a town hall to hear directly from my constituents, traveling all over the district to listen and share information, advancing the Taxpayer Data Protection Act to keep Musk from accessing your private information, holding officials accountable in committee hearings, and fighting for the federal workforce, labor rights, and economic policies, like investments made possible by the bipartisan CHIPS and Science Act, that put workers and families first.

The American people deserve a government that works for them, and I won’t back down – our democracy is too important.”
