Statement from Representative John W. Mannion (NY-22) on Syracuse University Chancellor Kent Syverud’s Retirement Announcement
SYRACUSE, N.Y. - Representative John W. Mannion (NY-22) today released the following statement:
“I thank Chancellor Kent Syverud for his years of service and leadership, and I wish him and his wife, Dr. Ruth Chen, the very best as they transition to this new chapter of their lives.
Chancellor Syverud’s legacy includes making Syracuse University a model for serving veterans and students with disabilities. The National Veterans Resource Center and InclusiveU are groundbreaking programs that set the standard for higher education institutions across the country. As a State Senator, I was proud to support these efforts, and in Congress I remain committed to making them even stronger in the years ahead.
The chancellor provided steady leadership during many challenges including the COVID-19 pandemic — while continuing to drive growth in enrollment, fundraising, and academic excellence. He also guided Syracuse through the rapidly changing landscape of college athletics, ensuring the university remained strong and competitive on the national stage.
I look forward to working with Syracuse University’s Board of Trustees and the next chancellor to continue advancing the university’s mission, its pursuit of knowledge and understanding, and its immeasurable contributions to the quality of life in the City of Syracuse.”
