SYRACUSE, NY — Representative John W. Mannion (NY-22) today announced that $2,062,000 in federal Community Project Funding he secured for the Onondaga County Sheriff’s Office and the Syracuse Police Department to purchase and equip new Mobile Command Centers has been formally awarded.
Representative John W. Mannion said, “Our law enforcement professionals need proper support and resources to protect our communities and respond to emergencies. These federal investments answer a locally identified need, giving the Onondaga County Sheriff's Office a new mobile command unit and helping the Syracuse Police Department replace its Mobile Command Post Bus. Together, these upgrades will improve emergency response, strengthen regional coordination, and better protect residents and visitors across Central New York. I am proud to stand with our professional local law enforcement officers and continue building on my record of supporting public safety initiatives, both in Congress and during my time in the State Senate.”
Onondaga County Sheriff Toby Shelley said, "When a critical incident unfolds, seconds count, and clear communication across jurisdictions can mean the difference between chaos and control. I want to express my sincere gratitude to Congressman Mannion for securing this federal funding, which directly invests in the safety of every resident in Onondaga County and throughout Central New York. This Mobile Command Unit is not just a vehicle; it is a state-of-the-art operational backbone. It provides our Tactical Operations Division, our local police, fire departments, EMS, and regional emergency management partners with the interoperable, on-scene communications and unified command capabilities required in high-stakes environments. When crisis strikes, our responders must be connected, protected, and fully coordinated. This grant ensures our men and women on the front lines have the reliable, modern technology they need to manage complex emergencies effectively and return home safely."
Syracuse Police Chief Mark Rusin said, “The Syracuse Police Department is deeply grateful to the Department of Justice for its support of our efforts to enhance public safety and regional emergency preparedness. The investment in a modern Mobile Command Post will significantly strengthen our ability to coordinate unified responses to major incidents, protect our residents and visitors, and collaborate effectively with our public safety partners throughout Onondaga County. This support ensures that our officers have the reliable tools and technology they need to meet today’s complex challenges and continue serving the community with excellence.”
The $1,031,000 for the Onondaga County Sheriff’s Office will allow for the procurement and outfitting of a state-of-the-art mobile command unit to enhance emergency response, strengthen interagency coordination, and improve operational effectiveness in the field. The Mobile Command Center will assist in all aspects of Onondaga County emergency operations, including safety and coordination at large public events, search and rescue missions, SWAT operations, enhanced communications, and deployment of modern equipment during critical incidents.
The $1,031,000 for the Syracuse Police Department will allow the department to replace its Mobile Command Post Bus with a modern and fully equipped vehicle to enhance emergency response and public safety operations. The vehicle will support unified command during active shooter incidents, major criminal investigations, natural disasters, hazardous materials incidents, search and rescue operations, and other large-scale incidents. The project also includes integration into emergency operations plans, operator training, equipment testing, and regional exercises with public safety partners.
The $2 million investments to support the Onondaga County Sheriff’s Office and the Syracuse Police Department are part of 15 Community Project Funding priorities advanced by Representative Mannion in partnership with local leaders across Central New York and the Mohawk Valley. All 15 projects have passed Congress and been signed into law, delivering a total of more than $15 million in federal funding to address locally identified needs—including public safety improvements, lead service line replacement, water and wastewater modernization, workforce training, airport infrastructure upgrades, and research critical to America’s economic and national security.
